Spittin’ Out Pet Sounds (mp3)

Finally listened to Hippocamp Ruins Pet Sounds. My friend Ben from Metempsychosis asked me to participate in this crazy Beach Boys remix project a while ago, but I was too lazy to take part. It ended up rocketing through the blogosphere, landing on Pitchfork, getting way more attention than anyone ever thought it would.

The music itself is mixed; some of the remixes are really cool, some are pretty boring, and some suffer from the IDM producer’s signature problem of focussing too much on production tweaks while clearly being tone deaf.

The version of “Don’t Talk (Put Your Head on Shoulder)” in particular, comes this close to something brilliant, layering Wilson’s pastoral haziness over chopped up ravey arpeggios, but fails by being completely out of tune/sync with those gorgeous vocals. That would be fine if this were the intended effect, but everything else is so perfect… I kinda doubt it.

jerohme spye - don't talk (talk wake walk take)

The standout for me is this totally absurd piece of musical stoopid-geniusness.

kidgloves and autistici - pet sounds (zoophilia)

…and that really just speaks for itself.

I just found a French radio broadcast featuring one of my tracks and one from Dr. Awkward. It’s about a year old now, but it’s still there. I have no idea what the guy is saying, but it’s really funny when he says “LESBIAN SPERM BANK” in English. Ah, the power of the interweb. Here’s the tracklist (down on the page), and here’s the stream.

So today is yet another day in which I wake up sometime sort of early, tell myself I need to get up, doze in and out of consciousness, and eventually convince myself to rise at around noon. This pathetic struggle can be a little self-defeating at times, especially when I realize that half my day is gone before I wake, but hey at least I am well rested.

It is now three o’clock PM and I am in the computer lab at the University of Westminster. I have been updating the Metempsychosis webpage (new releases!), and generally mucking about. Later on I will try to sell some CDs and find some cheap new jeans.

Tonight is Kat’s going away party. Kat is a Swedish girl who bartends at my local pub, the Cardinal. She knows my drink of choice, and likes to call me “love”, both very endearing qualities. The party should be well attenended, as every man woman and child in the Victoria neighborhood is friends with her by now.

Sorry for the military nature of this entry. Alas, my muse escapes me.

Just found out that Metempsychosis has lost it first member. Yes, Daniel Burzynski aka Contax has left our ranks, due to time constraints and such. Sad to see him go, but he is always with us in spirit. Of course, I could call him up on his mobile right now, since he resides in London, but that would just kill the drama, wouldn’t it?

This week finds me slip-sliding away towards my magnificently long three week Spring Break. I will be visiting friends in Italy, France, and Germany. I have some pretty worldly friends, don’t I? Very much looking forward to that. In the meantime, I will be trying to rid myself of this cold I seem to have come down with. Sadly, this may mean sleeping at normal hours and drinking less. What kind of a life is that?

On the music front, I have many new sounds in the pipeline for you all (yeah, that’s right all of you!) to hear, but, with no internet connection at home, who knows when these will find their way online. Just so you know, I have done two remixes of the Zelda theme song, one remix of “Blue Penumbra” by Satori, and a new original creation in a very chill dowtempo, dubby style. Working title: “Aquatic Railway Jazz”. Keep those ears peeled!

Excitement! I got a call from BBC Radio today, and it seems that they are interested in training me in thier studios, where I would be helping to create thier various radio programs. They were impressed by things I have done in the past, like my continuing participation in the (admittedly wondrous) Metempsychosis project, and my work on the board of KLC Radio in Portland. They will be hiring sometime within the month, at which point they will call me, so that I can begin the application process. This kind of work is right up my alley, and I am buzzed as all hell about it. Wish me luck!
