Playing Records Tonite

It’s sunny out so I’ll keep this brief. Tonight, Saturday, I will be playing records from 7 to midnight at Homestar (37th & Hawthorne). It’s an art opening for lovely PDX artist Trish Grantham as well as a celebration of Homestar’s recent liquor licensure. Beer and stuff is free early on and these Homestar dudes are really nice people. Mikaela’s Fiend, Hustler White, We Quit, Clap Amp, Inca Ore @ Hood, 7/14

[This post originally appeared on Team Tinnitus]

This was an awesome show. Mikeala’s Fiend is fucking amazing. They’re like two 17 year old dudes from Seattle playing the most slamming amazing noise rock in the world. Kinda midway between Lightning Bolt and Hella with more bounce. See this video from their last show in Portland for documentary proof (courtesy Jeff Mawer). Seriously one of the best new bands I’ve seen in a long time.

Here are some great photos taken by Jeff Mawer. Please take a second to check out the rest of his awesome photos.

(full disclosure: i play synth in clap amp)

Film as Ad for Music as Ad for Target

Lifestyle marketing is weird. I found this on Pitchfork today, nestled down in a flashy sidebar ad namedropping the Hold Steady, cute indie girl and almost imperceptible Target logo in tow. I clicked it, entering a cushy flash portal complete with fake desk and fake desk items. The eye candy settled and confusion set in: what is it? film trailer? tv show? …target? It seemed to want me to play these web videos (the podcast interview with the director calls them “webisodes”), so I did, and woah. It’s way creepy, like one of those super product placement heavy teen movies, but reversed. This time it’s more like “film placement” or something: the mock-casually arrayed back-to-school catalog and Bloc Party cell phone (it turns into a Target logo if you mouse over it!!!!) are the real stars here.

As for the story itself, it seems to revolve around our Seth-Cohen-lite indie rock hero and PCU-lite wacky friends trying to find a band to play some show at their college or something. I didn’t watch far enough but it’s looking like members of the bands Bloc Party, 22-20s (who is this?), British Sea Power, and the Hold Steady (again!) will be making appearances.

So here it is, indie rock in 2005: a culture placement in a Target movie. Damn.

Jamie Lidell (mp3)

Yesterday, THE FIRST DAY OF SUMMER (finger crossed), came back from the pool with a sunburn on my neck, rinsed off, set up the perpetually askew record player, and put Jamie Lidell on the turntable. I’m pretty sure that’s exactly how you’re supposed to listen to this record: sundazed, fresh, scattered. The album is pure joy on a floppy disc, classic motown and disco soul bumping up against Prince-via-Basement-Jaxx robofunk. It was perfect, the music and me connected by a cartoon smile and the sunshine between us. Later on I pick up the album sleeve and what does it say?: “This record is dedicated to you.” This is my summer jam and Jamie Lidell knows it.

Jamie Lidell - Multiply

ps: peep this amazing video of the man in crazy glam-futuristic performance

pps: while we’re on the subject of this really exciting genre-fucked electronic crossover music, this mugison mp3 is amazing. yet another reason soundslike might be my favorite label on the planet right now (others being brooks brooks BROOKS, soft pink truth, matthew herbert, 8 doogymoto).

Stolen Gear List

Here are the details regarding Blitzen Trapper‘s stolen gear. Please get in touch if you see any of this stuff anywhere. Says the band:

The gear was stolen out of our van about dawn on 29th and Alberta.

They took:

A blond Fender P-bass, with lock bolts for the strap and a black pick-guard. The nobs are from an amp, not standard. Flatwound strings on it. Early 70s model.
A beat-up Fender Telecaster, sunburst. There are Christina Aguilera and britney stickers on the back I think, and a suped-up pickup instead of the normal lipstick. Early 70s too.
A shitty Yamaha keyboard with an electro-harmonix sticker on it.
A Sun Concert bass amp head with MIDDLE-EARTH stenciled faintly on it.
A Sovtek MIG-60 tube amp head with a Dandy Warhols and Brian Jonestown Massacre sticker on it. The tubes inside aren’t original, they’re Teslas.

There was also a sleeping bag, a backpack filled with clothes, $, and a prescription from Dr. Wu-hu, boxes of food, an old-skool Canon camera, CDs, etc. Our keyboardist Drew was also stolen. So far we have no leads, but we’ve talked to the police.

Mikaela’s Fiend (twisted variant on the post Lightning Bolt scuzz annihilation, best new band from Seattle)

Hustler White (skronky fugged up art noise with big energy)

We Quit (also treading in Lightning Bolt water co-ed duo with punkish attack and super catchy pop songs..great new PDX band)

Eva Inca Ore (disembodied voice from Alarmist)

Clap Amp (another great new PDX band..skronky, caustic Numbers style moog punk with Ex Models styled vocal edge)

SAVE BLITZEN redux / Portland: Stolen Gear City USA

The most important part of this post is this: on Monday, July 11th, somebody stole a couple guitars, amp heads, a shitty keyboard, clothes, and some other little stuff from Blitzen Trapper’s van right off twentysomthing and NE Alberta. What’s worse, this happened on their home turf, Portland, during a one-day stop over in the midst of their first ever West Coast tour. If you hear of anyone hawking or recently having come into posession a collection of gear resembling this one please email me. I should have more specific info like brand names, models, etc pretty soon, in the meantime just please report anything that sounds like a possible match. I know it’s a long shot but you never know, right?

THAT SAID: WTF?!?!?!? What is it with Portland stealing gear from Portland bands? This same thing has happened to the Decemberists right after they got back from a much larger tour AND Brian from Nudge and other people who I don’t remember. These bands play all over the country and don’t have problems – why does it always seem to be here where this stuff happens? Effed up if you ask me.

Speaking of me, I’m back from my brief tour spell and knee-deep in booking this festival (which is shaping up to be pretty amazing). We ended up not getting a show to replace that Bellingham show, instead ended up getting irie in a gem shop, wandering aimlessly around Olympia, playing happy hour ping pong, doing tai chi by the harbor, asking every shitty bar in town if they needed a band for the night. They didn’t, so we went and saw Millions at the Capitol Theater (pretty cool, pretty cheese).

The shows themselves were fun and the band is sounding awesome. I urge anyone reading this to go see them on the rest of the tour. The KEXP in-studio dealy was rad and I got to meet the incredibly nice ladies who call themselves Three Imaginary Girls. They were in the studio playing some records, including PDX locals the Binary Dolls, which is super cool in my book. I always thought the name Three Imaginary Girls was a reference to their publication solely existing on the internet (hence “imaginary”) but turns out it’s a Cure song. I said as much and lost 5 million rock points right then and there.

SAVE BLITZEN!

Dearest readers of this blog,

The 3B Tavern in Bellingham is a giant piece of crap. I’m going along on the Washington leg of Blitzen Trapper‘s first evs west coast tour and they were supposed to play a show there tomorrow – and frikkin 3B dudes decided to cancel it YESTERDAY. Chantelle just alerted me to this. SUCKS.

So if any of you know of any awesome shows, house shows, bar mitzvahs, whatevers going on tomorrow (Sunday 7/10) night in Washington state that might be looking to add a rad weird pop band to the bill please hit me up on my celly at 503-679-7499 – and quick! Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Stressed but still stoked,
TRMW

PS: I will also be in the studio at KEXP with these dudes tonight at 8pm and you should all listen online. I won’t be talking or anything, but I will be there. You might hear me breathing or something.

P*L*U*R 3: Life of Brian

Brian Foote:

hey dude,

read the linked story in your PLUR post.
thought you might get a kick out this.
i got arrested and jailed for the better part of 48 hours for that huge rave bust in milwaukee that matos mentions.
i was working the fucking ‘smart bar’ at the party!
had s.w.a.t. team dudes pointing shotguns at me!!
so ridiculous….

check it

Brian Foote:

matos article is def accurate enough. mostly mike vance’s testimonial seems a little exaggerated. [e.g.there definitely weren't 50-60 cops] as best i remember, the early parties were all about lsd with ecstasy playing a more supplementary roll [no pun intended] till a year or 2 later. this lent itself to some really long weird parties.

i understand the promoters trying to distance themselves from the whole drug lean of the article. since this sensationalism always overshadowed the positives of the scene they worked so hard to build/sustain. i’m not speaking of PLUR ala matos’ talks of something that would “come along and unite everything”. [tho i experienced the same naive sentiment] i’m talking about the very real aspect of 1000+ midwesterners getting together and partying all night with no fights breaking out week after week.

you have to remember how ‘red state’ that area is/was [ridiculously overt racism/homophobia before that whole 'PC' thing came along]. in retrospect, these parties really were the only cross-cultural youth events in the area.

that said, the drugs were a central part of it. while sitting there zip-cuffed, i noticed i was sitting next about a pound of lo grade weed. there were bunches of kids working to fish contraband out of there pockets and inch themselves away from it. i always chalked the lack of evidence filed up to dirty cops. who knows?

it was definitely weird sitting in a 5 times capacity holding cell ,the ends of which were lined with angry members of opposing gangs, with a huge amount of tripping ravers losing their minds. i thankfully wasnt gonna drop that night til i was done ‘working’ or the jail time would have been excruciating.
