Secret Awesome

I should do a real post up in here soon, but in the meantime you’d do well to grab some of the shit-hot techno/hyphy/post-punk/etc mixes over at the just launched leechaggregates.com. These come courtesy of ex-PDX electronic head Brian J. Foote, who also happens to be responsible for the meta-jacking remix of Copy‘s forthcoming “Assassinator” currently streaming here. We’ll be putting that one out on Holocene Music 12″ sometime soon.

Deerhunter

Deerhunter - Cryptograms

Woah. Homeslice Brian Foote just tipped me off to this band called Deerhunter that I know nothing about. I’m listening to the first song on their myspace page right now and it’s making me excited and a little tingly. Scuzzy sloppy rock with cosmic underpinnings, similar to the amazing Swell Maps in that way. Speaking of whom, if you only buy one half of an album in your life make it the first half of Trip to Marineville. Holy sweet crap that is sublime music. And speaking of the holy and sublime, if you only see one band in your life make it the Animal Collective. I saw them last weekend and experienced one the most intense emotional reactions I’ve ever received from music. It deserves it’s own post.

Also: If you eat only one bucket of ice cream in your life make it Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Fudge Brownie. For it is the nectar of the gods.

Next up: unreleased Chevron jamz.

I Lurk You

Sorry for the lack of updates of late, been crazy moving out of my house of 2.5 years and moving into an excellent new apartment (the cool old brick ones right by Zell’s on 13th and Morrison). I’ve got a couple posts a-brewin’, but in the meantime please allow me to direct you to the awesome remixes Brian Foote has been posting over at Outward Music. I’m not sure what we’re even calling this music anymore, but it’s like completely mashed and reassembled techno, totally funky and totally weird and creative. Avant-techno? Ketamine house? I don’t know, just go there! Also, just remembered this bit of relevant info: Brian will be performing live in the flesh on December 16th at Crush, along with the inestimable Marius Libman aka Copy. Hey, that’s right by my apartment!

For more like this check DFA’s super cheap and rad Holiday Mix. Also very good.

P*L*U*R 3: Life of Brian

Brian Foote:

hey dude,

read the linked story in your PLUR post.
thought you might get a kick out this.
i got arrested and jailed for the better part of 48 hours for that huge rave bust in milwaukee that matos mentions.
i was working the fucking ‘smart bar’ at the party!
had s.w.a.t. team dudes pointing shotguns at me!!
so ridiculous….

check it

Brian Foote:

matos article is def accurate enough. mostly mike vance’s testimonial seems a little exaggerated. [e.g.there definitely weren't 50-60 cops] as best i remember, the early parties were all about lsd with ecstasy playing a more supplementary roll [no pun intended] till a year or 2 later. this lent itself to some really long weird parties.

i understand the promoters trying to distance themselves from the whole drug lean of the article. since this sensationalism always overshadowed the positives of the scene they worked so hard to build/sustain. i’m not speaking of PLUR ala matos’ talks of something that would “come along and unite everything”. [tho i experienced the same naive sentiment] i’m talking about the very real aspect of 1000+ midwesterners getting together and partying all night with no fights breaking out week after week.

you have to remember how ‘red state’ that area is/was [ridiculously overt racism/homophobia before that whole 'PC' thing came along]. in retrospect, these parties really were the only cross-cultural youth events in the area.

that said, the drugs were a central part of it. while sitting there zip-cuffed, i noticed i was sitting next about a pound of lo grade weed. there were bunches of kids working to fish contraband out of there pockets and inch themselves away from it. i always chalked the lack of evidence filed up to dirty cops. who knows?

it was definitely weird sitting in a 5 times capacity holding cell ,the ends of which were lined with angry members of opposing gangs, with a huge amount of tripping ravers losing their minds. i thankfully wasnt gonna drop that night til i was done ‘working’ or the jail time would have been excruciating.

CATCH THIS THIEF

Yesterday (I think) somebody stole a 12″ Apple G4 laptop from the home of Brian Foote of the band Nudge. This was taken from Brian’s house along with some X-Box games. The laptop is titanium/grey finish with no stickers or anything on it. If you see or hear of anybody who’s recently come into possession of these things please call the police (at least I think that’s what you’re supposed to do).

This is a seriously crucial blow: all of Nudge’s music files for their new album were on this laptop. This is basically ruining Brian’s right now so please if you know this person get in touch ASAP.
