On Any Sunday / Biker Dogs

On Any Given Sunday poster

I rented this movie last night and totally dug it. I heard about it on the awesome Dailysonic podcast, which I also recommend checking out. The movie is this super cheesey 70s documentary about the various styles of motorcycle racing, as directed and narrated by Bruce Brown aka the Endless Summer guy. It was funded by movie star / motorcycle enthusiast / ultimate 70s male Steve McQueen, who also just happens to be presented in a very positive light throughout. I could get into the details, but yeah, pretty much just 100% sunshine and smiles and happy people doing stupid things. The soundtrack is great too, kinda surfy, cheesey, with happy girls singing way OTT cheeseball lyrics. So yeah, there’s some major kitsch going on here, but there’s also a whole lotta heart, soul, and good vibes aplenty.

There’s also a really cool motorcycle-riding dog, as seen here:

And there’s 140 more awesome motorcycle-riding dogs on this page. YOU GOTTA LOVE THAT!

BEST BAND BIO EVER

HOLY CRAP PEOPLE:

“At age 16, John Swingset was at his house with 4 of his friends doing LSD while his mom was out of town. After hours (days?) of psychedelic revelry and well after the height of the trip, John needed a break from his friends and stepped out onto the balcony.

The sky was brilliant between the golden orange clouds as if painted on the azure blue by God himself. It was at this moment, the world broke. A huge eyeball opened in the sky, and communicated telepathically with him. It told him that he must learn to play guitar and sing. Shocked, unprepared, and in utter disbelief that he could ever learn to either sing or play guitar, much less at the command of a disembodied eyeball, John challenged it with a Question: How and/or why should do I do this? Its response was simple, “You have work to do.

At that moment, My Epiphany was born. A synthesis of electronic and organic instrumentation, that allows their audience to soar to ecstatic heights through heart pumping anthems as well as explore the pits of despair in bittersweet haunting melodies.

My Epiphany has played with Thursday, The Faint, Desaparecidos, Glasseater, Brandston, Coheed and Cambria, The Used, Further Seems Forever, Hopesfall, Stretch Arms Strong, Vaux, STUN, Now It’s Overhead, ScatterTheAshes, and Milemarker.”

Words fail.

My Blog Looks Different

Yep, it’s been a long time coming, but I’ve finally gotten around to redesigning this thing. I was getting really tired of all the tiny text and boxes on the old design and wanted something a little brighter and easier to read. I also wanted something simultaneously dentist-office ugly and early-nineties neon fugly, apparently. Hopefully this is a move in all those directions at once. What do you all think? Seriously, any and all suggestions are really helpful, as this is by no means a final draft and I want to make this as nice as possible for all of us. HOLLABACK!!!!!!

Also, check out this rad thread on the Urban Honking msg boards. It involves a certain really influential music website, an insta-big band, the (non)existence of absolute truth in the universe, and some French philosopher guy. Yeah, some very interesting conversation going on in there these days.

Smoke em if ya got em: ;’)-~

Philosophitallica

My girlfriend’s brother is fucking hilarious. Last night on the phone he told her about this assignment he had for high school class (philosophy? US history? not sure), in which he and a group of friends were asked to create an album cover for a band consisting of Locke, Voltaire, Rousseau, and Montesquieu aka the four major Enlightenment philospophers and rumored godfathers of the American Constitution (R.I.P.). Here’s what he came up with:

BAND NAME: Philosophitallica

BAND MEMBERS (instrument / “catchphrase”):

John Locke (frontman)

Francois Voltaire (“hammers home his ideals with his double bass drumming” ["double bass drumming" is a new one on me, aparently means dude has two kick drums. righteous!])

Jean-Jacques Rousseau (singer/songwriter / “bringin’ home the red scare with his communist-esque lyrics and bad boy attitude”)

Charles “The Baron” de Montesquieu (rhythm guitar)

ALBUM NAME: To Ordain, Establish, and Secure the Right to Rock

SAMPLE SONG NAMES:

“You Gotta Keep ‘Em Separated” (in reference to the branches of federal government [The Offspring: still packing cultural currency ten bazillion years after the fact])

“People: Loving, Caring, Sharing” (in reference to Locke’s belief that humans are basically good)

…and so on. Never did find out what the cover art looked like, but I can only assume it was funny. Girlfriend and I imagined teacher and his girlfriend/wife going over these assignments, how much fun that must be, decided they probably look forward to it all year. I would.

TONIGHT: PDX Katrina Benefit Auction

For the past couple weeks some good friends of mine have been working on a benefit auction and show, proceeds from which will go to the Red Cross Katrina Relief effort. They’ve been hand-decorating custom auction paddles, baking things, rounding up donations from our beautiful, creative community. It’s been an inspiring thing to watch, even if I have been a little too distracted to contribute in any meaningful way. It’s going down TONIGHT at Holocene, so please COME OUT! It’s pay-what-you-can, so bring $5, or drop $500 on some awesome art or a really tasty cookie. And did I mention dancing? DANCING. See you there!

UPDATE: Looks like I’m gonna be playing some records at this tonight! I start aroung 9:30. Fun!

***

A smorgasbord of performances by Portland favorites, with intermittent, heated, and impromptu auctioning of goods and services from local Portland artists and businesses.

All proceeds from the door, auction, and bar will go to benefit the American Red Cross. Bring clothes to donate to Portland’s refugee population (yes, we have one).

These plus 15 other auction prizes of equal intrigue!

***Homemade art-filled pinata
***4 Passes to TBA Main Stage (PICA)
***One Room of Your House Professionally Painted
***Serenades by local bands (you name the time and place!)
***a DJ slot on KPSU
***a mural painted in your home by Johnne Eschelman
***Carte Blanche evening at Holocene (entry, drinks, food…)
***Custom Cupcake Telegram
***Bike Tune-Ups
***Massage Therapy
***CD Cover Art and Design (multifresh)

The Most, The Hoofbeats, Level Anchorage, The Ics and Isms @ 4025 SE Sherman, 8/31

[This post originally appeared on Team Tinnitus]

Hmmmmm, Team Tinnitus has been a little quiet of late no? Yeah, it has, but let’s not get into any of that lame-ass navelgazing “well, this is why, because I, uh, had all this stuff to do and yaddayadda” – let’s not even get into it. Let’s just say we need some more CONTRIBUTORS up in this piece so if you go to shows a lot and you think you’d like to post something up in here please holler at yr blog.

Now let’s talk about this show I went to last night. It was a house show right near my house and my friends’ band was playing (The Hoofbeats) so when I saw the MySpace post I figured it’d be a nice way to spend a late summer night, and indeed it was. Javan and I first hit up the Egyptian Room, a lesbian drinking establishment right next to his house that we’d both been meaning to check out for a while. It was pretty chill inside, nice lighting, a little intimidating given that we were the only dudes in the place, but everyone was super nice. Also probably some good medicine for this straight white dude, given how rarely I’m put in that “other” position. Javan got a Makers on the rocks. I’ve never seen him drink whiskey.

We’d planned it so that this drink would take place during the first couple bands, seeing as we really just wanted to see the Hoofbeats (assholes!), but it didn’t work out like that. We ended up seeing all four bands. Here’s what I thought of those bands:

LEVEL ANCHORAGE

level anchorage

I caught my friend text messaging “This is the last house show I’m going to” during this set, and I couldn’t really blame him. Seemed like nice guys tho, so I’m not gonna go any further into the negazone.

THE HOOFBEATS

hoofbeats

Now I know these people are my friends and all, but I swear they are actually pretty damn good. It’s an all female crew consisting of Jessica Jones from We Quit and, uh, Jessica Jones (bass) and two awesome girls I went to college with named Nell (drums) and (another) Jessica (guitar/vox). The music is kind of simple indie pop stuff, but Jessica has this wonderfully deadpan/flat voice (think Liz Phair) that makes puts just the right edge on that sweetness. The arrangements are also surprisingly deep in certain parts, and the choruses are totally smiley and great. This band is good, and these people are great. Hell yes to that.

THE MOST

Talk about stony x 5000 (right?) – turns out I went to high school with the drummer for this band. How random is that? She just moved to SF from Santa Cruz, but we both grew up in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas. Trippy… Anyway, it was awesome to reconnect with her and her band was really fun. Totally stripped down garage rock stuff, totally fun to bounce along to in a basement.

THE ICS AND ISMS

ics and isms

note: the kid second from right in the striped shirt has a new order patch on the back of his shirt, which is fucking adorable and awesome. way to subvert the macho punk paradigm kiddo! wuss-core 4 life!

This was a one man singer-songwriter deal. He set himself up right in the front of the living room, where you’d have to basically sit in his lap to get out the door. So I felt trapped at first – What if this sucks? Confrontation! Shit! – but it ended up being pretty good. Dude had a really nice voice, highish, tenor maybe. His songs were about really specific situations, like going to hook up some weed with a new lady friend then ending up doing coke at the dealer’s house then having another friend break up with his girlfriend and having to share a bed the three of you and not being able to sleep and thinking about stuff you shouldn’t then saying that stuff the next day and fucking up what little relationship you had. It was a little emo, yes, but delivered in this kind of sweet, optimistic way that made it ok. But then every song was about a girl and that got boring so we left.

ps: you can do better than this.

PROMO!!!

The Hoofbeats and The Most are playing together again at ACME this Friday. …Go!

Ninja High School (mp3)

I just read about these guys on Pitchfork, checked out their website and, dude, they are super good. Self-described “positive hardcore dance-rap band from Toronto”, their music mixes stoopid shouty rap with electro beats and basement punk flava. Really fun music for Friday noontime with the sun streamin’ in my window. Pitchfork says they just got signed to Tomblab so I’m guessing we’ll be hearing more, and that’s a good thing.

I’m feelin’ this!:

Ninja High School - By Purpose Not By Plan (Sex Nerds Mix)
Ninja High School - Shake It Off
