TONIGHT: PDX Katrina Benefit Auction

For the past couple weeks some good friends of mine have been working on a benefit auction and show, proceeds from which will go to the Red Cross Katrina Relief effort. They’ve been hand-decorating custom auction paddles, baking things, rounding up donations from our beautiful, creative community. It’s been an inspiring thing to watch, even if I have been a little too distracted to contribute in any meaningful way. It’s going down TONIGHT at Holocene, so please COME OUT! It’s pay-what-you-can, so bring $5, or drop $500 on some awesome art or a really tasty cookie. And did I mention dancing? DANCING. See you there!

UPDATE: Looks like I’m gonna be playing some records at this tonight! I start aroung 9:30. Fun!

***

A smorgasbord of performances by Portland favorites, with intermittent, heated, and impromptu auctioning of goods and services from local Portland artists and businesses.

All proceeds from the door, auction, and bar will go to benefit the American Red Cross. Bring clothes to donate to Portland’s refugee population (yes, we have one).

These plus 15 other auction prizes of equal intrigue!

***Homemade art-filled pinata
***4 Passes to TBA Main Stage (PICA)
***One Room of Your House Professionally Painted
***Serenades by local bands (you name the time and place!)
***a DJ slot on KPSU
***a mural painted in your home by Johnne Eschelman
***Carte Blanche evening at Holocene (entry, drinks, food…)
***Custom Cupcake Telegram
***Bike Tune-Ups
***Massage Therapy
***CD Cover Art and Design (multifresh)

LET’S DO THIS!!!

Holy crap. After working on this thing for the better part of a year, the second annual PDX POP NOW! (exclamation mandatory) festival will be starting in a little over one hour. I am stoked. STOKED!!!!! It was a shit-ton of work coordinating the booking schedule with 49 bands – all graciously donating their time – but oh so worth it: we have a great and weird mix of bands (hillstomp + fogatron + strength = free yr minds!!), it’s free and all ages (one of our raddest volunteers is 18!), and people are getting stoked on their community. Hopefully that love spreads out and circulates through the general music-going population in Portland or maybe-just-maybe increases those ranks a little bit. No matter what, it’s gonna be one fun-ass weekend. I’ll be there for the whole damn thing – meet me at the soda bar!

FAMOUSNESS UPDATE: I was on the Village Voice website yesterday. What?!?

It’s sunny out so I’ll keep this brief. Tonight, Saturday, I will be playing records from 7 to midnight at Homestar (37th & Hawthorne). It’s an art opening for lovely PDX artist Trish Grantham as well as a celebration of Homestar’s recent liquor licensure. Beer and stuff is free early on and these Homestar dudes are really nice people. I plan on dropping the aforementioned Jamie Lidell and maybe some new Vector Lovers stuff and this awesome Brooks/Hot Chip remix I just picked up.

Promo Addendum

Also, you should go to this rad show tonight:

Flyer for Blitzen Trapper, Doris Henson, and Crinkum Crankum show at Holocene in Portland, Oregon on April 8th, 2005

NOTES:
* It’s at Holocene.
* That really tiny text says 5 bucks for PICA people.
* The first band features Raymond Bettibon and Hans Weigand.
* I swear to god my DJ name is not DJ Matt Wright. I just don’t have a solo DJ name (CUM LAZER is me and my dog Steve) so Scott put that on there. I’m thinking DJ Deluxe Vinyl Poncho. Thoughts, anyone?

I’m starting to get really excited about the Blitzen Trapper CD release show, taking place this Friday at good old Berbati’s Pan. I booked the whole thing myself, which I don’t usally do. I’m very stoked about how the lineup came together – varying degrees of “artsy” and “poppy” overlapping in nice ways. These are three of my favorite bands in town on one bill and it feels good to be a part of that. Check out the long-winded press release I wrote for it here.*

Here’s my first ever MP3-bloggy link:

Blitzen Trapper - Summer Twin

Here’s the awesome poster, designed by the B.Trap:

Blitzen Trapper Field Rexx CD Release poster

fig 17: cum, join us.

Do get there early so you can catch the Graves, who never play out and are very talented in a low-key way. Just listened to their first album again this weekend, and yeah it’s still very nice. The Kingdom are great too, and I’m not the only who thinks so – they just got signed to the only biggish label in town.

Steve and I (CUM LAZER) will be in full effect too, dropping poorly mixed heat between bands and afterwards. I’m hoping to instigate full-on dance party action before the night is out, which would would be a first for me in those vaunted Greek halls.

Sort of funny story: the wonderful lady who books Berbati’s, Chantelle Hylton, took the liberty of putting us on the venue calendar as “special guest superstar deejay duo CUM LAZER!!”. I thought that was cute. I also mentioned us in the press release for the show as CUM LAZER DJs – so as not to imply bandness. The end result? The “superstar” bit made it into all the calendar ads in the papers, and the Mercury listed us as CUM LAZER DJS (which sounds like the lazer coming back from the future to save the present). Thus my attempts to avoid confusion only create more weird ambiguity, which makes perfect sense. CUM LAZER: it’s all in yr mind. TRIPPY!

Also, ramen actually smells really good after all the water in the pot has evaporated due to compulsive blogging whilst boiling noodles, some of which are now cemented to the bottom of said pot in an appealing brain-like pattern. They smell like mac ‘n’ cheese when you leave it in the stove longer than you’re supposed to, which I do, because Grandma always made them that way. In short: I *heart* burnt noodles. Not sure about the band though (figure 18).

* (I don’t think I’ve mentioned this yet on the ol’ blog, but I do music-related publicity for my (meager) living, and one of the things I’m doing right now is promoting this album. I booked this show and sent out a press release, hoping that local music scribes might take the occasion to get PUMPED on the Trapper and inform the public, thereby causing all of Portland to realize the pop genius lurking in our midst. The cynical/smart among you will be reading $$$ into my enthusiasm, but trust me: I feel this band, LOTS. They are indeed wonderful and they deserve to be heard. This is my mission.)
